QOD #4: Do you stand for something?
Is there a cause or movement that you are passionate about? Do you make a conscious effort to support or work towards the positive outcome of an organization, group or non-profit?
Passion projects. That's what I call my service. And I have two. The first is an children's international charity, The Colombo-American Education Foundation www.colombiankids.org. We raise money for scholarships to educate children in Neiva, Colombia. My good friend Margarita began her non-profit more than 15 years ago. Nearly every year for the past 14 years, we have hosted a golf tournament. Visit the site - or message me if you would like to play golf ($175/player), donate a silent auction item or be a sponsor. Our goal is to raise $25,000 for the coming school year.
My other passion project also has to do with education - but of a slightly different sort. I work with a team of entrepreneurs passionate about the startups and entrepreneurs who feed our global economy. Free Lunch Friday is a meetup designed to feed hungry entrepreunurs content, community and connections. Through the generous donations of sponsors, we feed 80-100 people lunch, program a 20 minute TED-esque talk and create a community gathering. My good friend, Oscar (@notagrouch) helps me run the Orange County chapter. But the group is live in 6 cities across the US. Find your location here: www.thefreelunchfriday.com.
